Opinel meets Atsuko Totsuka-Blanchet

Atsuko Totsuka-Blanchet is from Japan and now lives in France.
Atsuko gives cookery lessons and sells objects made in Japan. She is the founder of Shiori, a concept where she selects objects made by Japanese craftspeople that are adapted to everyday French life. These objects focus on an ever-present Japanese concept: Yōnobi (⽤の美), or functional beauty.

A design value that Opinel holds dear.

Atsuko looked for craftsmen in Hyogo, Osaka, Gifu and Niigata to work on the Opinel knife. She eventually chose Nigara Hamono in the Aomori prefecture which is famous for its 350-year-old Tsugaru Uchihamono cutlery, to create this striking knife that blends two cultures...

Nigara Hamono has chosen an exceptional steel, VG7, a multi-layer stainless steel. The hand hammering process is called Tsuchime, and creates an irregular surface that prevents wet food from sticking to the blade. The blade has a remarkably sharp cut and edge that will last for years. The handle is made of flamed maple, a luminous, shimmering wood.
